The Na+/I− symporter (NIS), a glycoprotein expressed at the basolateral plasma membrane of thyroid epithelial cells, mediates active I− uptake for the biosynthesis of thyroid hormones and radioiodide transport for diagnosis and treatment in thyroid cancer.
